Sexuality: (For those who may be concerned with it.) While Garnet has never explored the idea of sexuality (being practically locked up by your mother doesn’t allow for many opportunities in that respect), it can be said she is definitely inclined to the heterosexual life style. She shows an interest in Zidane, and through the game there are continuing hints of a budding romance with them.

However, if she is approached in any manner by anyone, regardless of gender, I think she would be curious enough to just think of the chances that would come with it. She hasn’t had much experience with the world outside Alexandria and as such I believe it would makes sense for her to exhibit some curiosity.

Appearance: Garnet first appears to us a slight young woman. She can be called pretty, but she hardly pays that much mind. She is known for the sweeping long length of chestnut brown hair, it falls to a length nearly as long as she is tall.

Wardrobe wise, she is first found to be in disguise, with a white robe with red adornments. A strange outfit choice, considering she is more of a summoner than a white mage. However, once this is lost she is seen in a golden-rod yellow jumper with a white blouse, red boots, and a strange gem she seems to always keep about her neck.

From where I will be taking her, Garnet has changed ever so slightly. She still dresses the same and there’s hardly a change in facial features, however her length of hair has been recently cut to an extreme change. Where her hair used to fall near to her knees, it now rests at just about the shoulder.

Personality: Garnet is first and foremost the princess of Alexandria. She is caring and has a genuine concern and love for her kingdom and those that live in it. She is well spoken and well mannered in most respects. She is highly educated and can be relied on to solve problems that may call for a use of logic. However, she is a strong minded individual and can exhibit a stubborn streak if her views are not taken to heart.

A life in a castle has lead to her having some setbacks though, one of them being a high level of naiveté. Garnet knows very little of the outside world, and had only recently begun to learn thanks to the efforts of Zidane. She is still shocked by the unwholesome truths of the world and her high level of empathy can make some of these things very unpleasant for her. However, she is trying and she makes valiant efforts to blend in with the normal life outside of the court of Alexandria.

She can come to rely on others, but she makes any relationship into one of duality. She will not take without giving, even if she cannot offer much in return. However, this reliance on others makes her doubt herself at times when their help is not there, as she has not fully learned the art of autonomy.

Abilities/Weaponry/Strengths: Garnet is just learning some of her given abilities, and has only recently obtained control over the Eidolons she can summon. As such, there are times when she will have difficulty with them. Outside of the summoning ability Garnet is skilled in white magics, though that is more of a supplemental ability when summoning Eidolons is not available.

Due to her abilities, her weapon of choice is a mage’s staff. This means physically she is not the best fighter.

Her strengths however lie neither in her magical abilities or her physical drawbacks. Her true power is in her mind. She is a quick thinker and has her ways out of any situation. She has been known to ask Zidane for sleeping weed under the excuse of helping her insomnia, only to later slip it to him and the others in order to sneak out of the castle. She has tricks up her sleeves and she is not afraid to use them.

Weaknesses: Weaknesses are something Garnet has plenty of. She is, as mentioned earlier, physically weak and while she has a lot of stamina that can wear down fairly quickly if she is subject to being the target of stronger attacks.

Mentally, her most debilitating weakness is her self-deprecating nature. She has the habit of blaming herself for every little problem regardless of whether or not it really is her fault. This can play on her self-esteem and as such she is an easy target for mind games.

History: Originally born to a summoner of Madain Sari, the land of the summoner tribe, Garnet grew up under the name of Sarah for the first few years of her life. However, her childhood as a summoner came to an end when Madain Sari was attacked. She and her mother tried to escape by way of boat, only for the small ship to be destroyed. Her mother died, where Gor misfortune, to wash ashore in Alexandria.

She was discovered on the shore by the King of Alexandria. By some random chance of fate she looked nearly identical to the real Princess Garnet, who had died earlier from illness. The only thing off about her was her summoner’s horn at her forehead. The King had the horn removed and set her in place as the “replacement” princess. It would seem her time at sea had caused a slight memory loss in the now-Garnet, and she grew up believing Queen Brahne and the King were truly her parents and that she was indeed the princess of Alexandria.

Her “father” died sometime before the tale of Final Fantasy IX truly begins, and left Queen Brahne to the throne since Garnet was still much to young to take the throne herself. One can assume that things continued well until a man by the name of Kuja came to Alexandria with weapons and Queen Brahne become obsessed and corrupted by the idea of domination. It was around this time that Garnet began to plan an escape from Alexandria.

Fate would once more bring chance on Garnet’s side, for it would seem that just as she was planning her escape, the thief group Tantalus was planning to kidnap her. She willing went along with this plan and joined with Tantalus as they escaped Alexandria, even going so far as to aid Zidane in a fight against her guard Steiner. Upon their flight out of the city, the Tantalus Theater Ship was badly damaged by a bomb and they were forced to land in the Evil Forest. Steiner, having still been on the ship joined with Tantalus in order to aid in her rescue from the monsters inside the forest.

Before they enter their first village of Dali, Garnet adopts her second name, “Dagger”, taking it from the name of Zidane’s knife. It is here that Garnet gets her first less in “common speak” from Zidane. She experiences some difficulty in this respect, often addressing the townspeople in an overly formal manner.

The gang continues on their journey from here, eventually coming to Lindblum. It is here that Garnet meets with her uncle Regent Cid Farbool IX to speak about Queen Brahne’s new ambitions. Cid refused to take any major action against the kingdom of Alexandria, and he and Zidane both insist on Garnet staying in Lindblum for her safety. This, of course, does not sit well with Garnet and she resolves to visit her mother herself by using a feast to commemorate the Festival of the Hunt for her own means. She slips Sleeping Weed into everyone’s food at dinner. Once free of dinner she drags Steiner (the only one not slipped Sleeping Weed) with her to the South Gate and she further uses her cunning to slip past the guards here as well.

Garnet and Steiner reach Alexandria again in fair safety, only to be betrayed by Queen Brahne. All of her Eidolons are extracted from her and all of them (Odin, Atomos, and Bahamut) are later used as weapons by Queen Brahne and Kuja.

Without her Eidolons, Garnet is slated as useless by Queen Brahne, and is basically left to await a possible demise until she is later resqued by Zidane. Garnet is at this point having a conflict within herself over the trustworthiness of her mother and the existence of Eidolons within her. It is only after Garnet meets the Eidolon Ramuh at Pinnacle Rocks that she casts the fear of Eidolons and accepts Ramuh as the first Eidolon she is likely to summon.

It after this that the group comes to travel to Madain Sari on the Outer Continent, and they come to meet Eiko Carol the sole inhabitant of the destroyed village of Madain Sari. This is where Garnet learns of her true past and her birthrights, and while she comes to accept them she still sees herself as Brahne’s daughter.

The group continues on, and things come to a head at the Iifa Tree where Brahne tries to dispatch Kuja with the use of Bahamut only to have it backfire and she is left for dead. Garnet tries to comfort her adoptive mother only for her efforts to be in vain as Brahne dies on the Outer Continent’s shore. Garnet is then in line to be Queen of Alexandria.

A bittersweet coronation ceremony goes even more awry when Kuja returns to Alexandria with the Eidolon Bahamut. The city is under attack and its only hope comes when Garnet and Eiko work together to summon Alexander. Bahamut is defeated, but Garland uses the Invincible to destroy Alexander and much of Alexandria. The shock of this event renders Garnet mute and she is unable to speak for a significant amount of time. She is apparently guilt-ridden for failing to protect Alexandria. She finally over comes her grief when she takes the time to mourn at her mother’s grave site. Garnet finally breaks her silence by telling Zidane her resolution to fight for her country. To symbolize her new resolution, Garnet takes Zidane’s dagger in hand and cuts off her long hair. It is directly from this point that she will be entering the game.
